Digger Rockwell. After his billion-dollar empire causes an environmental disaster, he is enlisted by the geriatric US president (John Goodman) to fix his problem. Along the way, he clashes with government officials and scientists who dare to question the actions of the rich man, made up by a powerhouse cast, including Riz Ahmed and Sandra Hüller.
After Iñárritu's Oscar wins with Birdman and The Revenant, Digger has inherited multitudes of award hype, especially among Cruise’s ever-growing fandom, for the desire to finally see him win an acting Oscar. The trailers show off Cruise’s jarring, almost cartoonish transformation, with a beer belly, southern accent, and combover, which are sure to combine with his screen presence to give a performance to remember. After his run in the Mission: Impossible franchise, a change of tone will let him show off his range to newer fans, as this is his first non-action movie in more than a decade, while still keeping hold of the world threatening stakes. The film is shot on VistaVision, which will fully allow Academy award winner Emmanuel Lubezki to show off the bleakness and scale of the scenario, to give a stark contrast with the film’s comedic air. Iñárritu is sure to give an absurd take on the climate crisis through the lens of the type of greed and power causing it, in the form of an eco-conscious comedy. There have been countless disaster movies over the years (ranging in feasibility), but Digger puts Cruise right at the centre of one of the world’s greatest threats. [Jacob Martindale]
