Brian De Palma at the absolute peak of his powers, Blow Out is an unbelievably stylish thriller drenched in political paranoia and deepening disillusionment with a world where the truth can be so easily manipulated. Starring John Travolta as a sound technician who, while recording audio for a film, inadvertently bears witness to a murder. This swiftly triggers a series of events that lead him down a dangerous rabbit hole as he attempts to uncover the truth behind the recording and expose a deadly political conspiracy. Channeling classically Hitchcockian visuals and themes of voyeurism via a distinctly 80s aesthetic and strikingly vivid colours, De Palma turns analogue technology into an instrument of suspense, as cameras, microphones, and tape recorders become tools through which the gaze can be reconstructed, replayed, and manipulated.
