Come see Clayface presented with stunning 4K laser projection on the big screen in L3!
With Clayface, James Watkins promises to turn the superhero genre on its head and create a low-budget David Cronenberg style body horror about the struggles of fame, and the desperate lengths people will go to in order to remain relevant. Making his debut all the way back in 1940, Clayface has never really been able to escape his position as a B-list Batman villain, as of yet not appearing on the big screen. But as one of the only members of Batman’s rogue gallery with superpowers, Clayface has always intrigued me in his ability to shapeshift into anyone he pleases. Watkins’ film follows actor Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries) as he is disfigured in an accident and turns to Naomi Ackie’s scientist to undergo an experimental operation which turns his body into clay. Another enticing element of Clayface is Watkins’ use of B and C list British actors who as of yet have not had major success in Hollywood, with the most notable name attached being Eddie Marsan. This proves how much faith DC heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have in Watkins’ vision, that they believe it can stand on its own legs without a major actor attached. Writing the screenplay is horror icon Mike Flanagan, perhaps best known for the Haunting… series on Netflix and 2019’s Doctor Sleep, who unfortunately had to hand directing duties to Watkins due to commitments to his Carrie series, which looks… interesting. Yeah, we’ll leave it at that. The story here is also directly adapted from the 1992 Feat of Clayepisode from Batman: The Animated Series which contains some of the finest television animation ever produced. The Batman director Matt Reeves is also attached alongside Gunn as a producer, so who knows what impact this will have on the DC timeline. Maybe the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is finally about to change? Who knows? All I know is I will be watching this in L3, hope to see you all there! [Isaac Bennett-Gregory]
