Come see The Good, the Bad and the Ugly presented on stunning 35mm film on the big screen in L3!
From the moment the credits roll, Sergio Leone’s images are brought to life by Ennio Morricone’s legendary music creating the iconic rhythm of this operatic, expansive and brutal Spaghetti Western. Set against the backdrop of the American civil war, the film follows three outlaws, Blondie or ‘The Man With No Name’ (Clint Eastwood), Angel Eyes (Lee Van Cleef) and Tuco (Eli Wallach) as they hunt for a buried treasure. Leone’s seminal film closed off his unofficial ‘Dollars’ trilogy and drastically changed the perception of the American west on film, popularising the brutal yet comic Spaghetti Western sub-genre. A sub-genre of the western made by Italian productions and shot in Europe popular in the early 1960’s till the late 70’s that subverted the hopeful white knights of American westerns into ruthless, morally ambiguous outlaws.
Eli Wallach’s Tuco is delightfully evil, delivering one liners like poetry and perfectly juxtaposing Clint Eastwood’s more serious and reserved performance. Built on a series of slowly unfolding sequences, the film crescendo’s with Morricone’s operatic score to the emblematic shootout scene that anyone who loves films has encountered before.
What better way to experience Leone’s influential cinematic masterpiece and the sweat ridden, heavy faces of Eastwood, Wallach and Van Cleef brought to life on glorious 35mm. [Daksh Banerjee]
