Warwick SU Against UCU Industrial Action

This Union Notes:

This section should include any facts, figures or statements that you believe are relevant to the topic of your policy. Remember in this section clear and effective referencing is important.

  1. That students have faced immense disruption to their education since the coronavirus pandemic began with teaching being reduced, cancelled outright or moved online. 1

  1. That SU’s are starting to stand up against disruption to teaching. 2

  1. That the University and College Union (UCU) are currently balloting their membership regarding industrial action that could result in strikes taking place before Christmas and into the New Year. 3

  1. That the UCU recently held several weeks of strikes in late 2019 and early 2020. 4 5

  1. That in term 1 of the 2019-20 academic year, a motion mandating the SU to support the UCU strikes was passed at ASV. 6

  1. That 76% of students want to have teaching as usual compared to just 24% of students who would rather miss out. 7

  1. That tuition fees for home undergraduate students are currently £9250 whilst fees for overseas students are often considerably more. 8 9

  1. That the National Union of Students (NUS) has already come out in support of the potential industrial action with National President, Larissa Kennedy, claiming that the NUS stands “shoulder to shoulder” with the potential strikers. 10

This Union Believes:

This section should include opinions or supporting statements for your policy.

  1. That after two academic years plagued by strike action, national lockdowns and disruption to the quality and quantity of teaching, any further industrial action would be grossly unfair for students and only serve to further damage the student experience.

  1. That university teaching staff are entitled to fair pay and fair pensions but shouldn’t punish students in order to achieve this.

  1. That the NUS were wrong to release a statement supporting the potential industrial action

  1. That the survey results prove that students would rather have teaching as usual and do not want to miss out on it.

  1. That UCLSU did the right thing by backing an end to disruption to teaching.

This Union Resolves:

This section should be about how you want the SU to react, the outcome of this policy. Remember to mandate specific departments/sabbatical officers; this will make things easier for future accountability

  1. That this motion shall mean that the motion 141 - Warwick SU for Fair Pay & Pensions is lapsed and revoked.

  1. To mandate that the SU Sabbatical Officers release a statement condemning industrial action should the UCU ballot succeed.

  1. To mandate the Education Officer and Postgraduate Officer to lobby the Warwick UCU not to take industrial action should the ballot succeed.

  1. To mandate the SU Sabbatical Officers and the Warwick delegation to the NUS National Conference to release a statement condemning the NUS’s recent statement regarding industrial action.

  1. To mandate the Warwick delegation to the NUS National Conference to draft policy to bring to the 2022 National Conference that opposes any future UCU industrial action.

  1. To mandate the Education Officer, the Postgraduate Officer and the President to lobby the university to provide tuition fee refunds to students if industrial action goes ahead.
