ALIJAH TAHA

Hey everyone! I’m Alijah (he/him), your current Vice President for Postgraduates, and I’m running to be your next SU President! Let’s build an SU that truly works for students—one that listens, acts, and delivers.

MY VISION FOR A STRONGER SU

Read on to see how I will achieve change for YOU in the SU!

Al-back-a change. Al-back-a Alijah!

πŸŽ™ Your Voice, Your SU
The SU is yours, not a business. It must listen, not decide for you. Let’s fix the SU by giving students real control.

πŸ’° Cut Costs, Not Choices
Rent, transport, food—uni shouldn’t drain your wallet. The SU must support students, not profit off them.

πŸ’™ Support That Never Sleeps
Wellbeing is 24/7. Mental health, academics, sports—all must be accessible, always.

⚑ A Union that Works for You
The SU should be quick and clear in responding to students. Less delays, obstruction, and paperwork. Let’s fix things.

πŸ“š Education Beyond Exams
Uni is for learning, not just grades. Teaching should inspire, assessments should be fair and inclusive.

STILL ME, STILL FIGHTING FOR YOU

Isn’t that your VP Postgraduate? Changed much? This time, I’m back—with another alpaca and an even bigger mission.

Here’s what I’ve already delivered for you:

βœ… A Stronger Student Voice

  • Fought to establish the Postgraduate Forum so PGs have real representation in the SU, Student Council, and beyond.
  • More postgraduate candidates than ever running this year—wonder why? (I’ll let you figure that one out.)
  • Every PG was once an undergrad. I’ll keep pushing for both UG & PG students to have the best experience possible.

βœ… Support & Wellbeing – No Student Left Behind

  • Ran wellbeing events for students who stayed on campus over Christmas. Thought I’d leave you alone and go on holiday? Not happening.

βœ… Brought Alpacas to campus—but not just for fun. This event built a Neurodiverse Student Guide to University Life, raising awareness, supporting students, and training staff on how to help. This will be a regular event, with more alpacas, free lunches, and wellbeing activities.

βœ… Fighting for Fair Policies & Better Education

  • Took the fight to MPs and the UK Government, lobbying against visa policies that make it harder for international students to stay and work—especially the salary threshold for sponsored jobs.
  • Made Warwick acknowledge its exam timetabling issues and pushed for a better system—you’ll notice the difference soon.
  • Delivered Warwick Experience events for international students & focus groups to bring home PG students' voices into decision-making.

βœ… Making Warwick More Affordable

  • Proved Rootes Grocery Store is overpriced with a market basket comparison—now the university is looking into better alternatives.
  • Stopped an attempt to charge extra fees for PG extensions and extended bursary so more students can apply.

βœ… Bringing the SU to You

  • Told the SU to stop being Piazza-centric—now working to bring SU presence to Gibbet Hill campus.
  • Pushed for SU job vacancies to go to students first. If a full-time role can be split into two part-time jobs, it should be.

βœ… Fighting for Fair Assessments

  • Collected data on module fail rates and demanded the university look at modules themselves, not just penalize students who don’t get a full Master’s award.
  • I’ve spent my time as VP Postgraduate making real change happen. Now, I want to do even more—for all students.

πŸŽ™οΈ YOUR VOICE, YOUR SU – A UNION THAT LISTENS

βœ… A Stronger, More Accessible Student Council

  • More council meetings. More engagement. Every student and student group should have a seat at the table. No closed-door decisions.

βœ… A Union, Not a Corporation

  • The SU exists to serve you, not to act like a business. It must amplify student voices, not assume what’s best.

βœ… Referenda on Major Decisions

  • Students should vote on big issues. More All Student Votes mean real student democracy, not just internal SU decisions.

βœ… Every Student Heard, Every Voice Equal

  • No student should feel unheard. No matter your political views, background, or affiliations—your voice matters.

βœ… Stand With Students, Always

  • I will always side with students. Human rights matter—whether it’s the struggles in Palestine or any other injustice, students have the right to protest, speak out, and be heard.

βœ… Your Representatives Decide

  • Your elected representatives should make the internal and day-to-day decisions within the SU.

βœ… Full Transparency, Real Communication

  • The SU must communicate decision-making to students, not just invite them to commercial events.
  • Every process should be open, clear, and accountable.

βœ… Stronger Partnerships, More Opportunities

  • More collaboration with NUS, student networks, and charities so students can access more resources, support, and funding.

βœ… Freedom to Protest

  • Warwick students have a proud history of protest—I will campaign against any encroachments on that ability.

πŸ’° CUT THE COST, NOT YOUR CHOICES

βœ… Rootes Grocery Store – A Make-or-Break Promise

  • I’m already working to push for replacing Rootes with a competitively priced store.
  • If this isn’t delivered by next academic year, I might as well resign. It’s an alpaca promise.

βœ… Fix the Prices

  • Raising prices is not the only way to earn money, lowering prices can increase sales. The SU and university must stop overcharging students—affordable doesn’t mean loss-making.

βœ… Affordable Hot Lunch – No Compromise

  • A proper meal should be affordable. No, not a toastie or tomato soup—real hot food at student prices.

βœ… Cheaper Transport, Better Routes

  • Work with National Express for cheaper passes and better routes to compete with Stagecoach.
  • On-campus parking should be affordable for students—same rates as staff.
  • Introduce a £10 per term cycle rental scheme for cheap, green transport.

βœ… Flexible Warwick Sports Memberships

  • Introduce termly Warwick Sport membership plans—not everyone can pay hundreds upfront.
  • I know this struggle—I couldn’t afford it as a student, and I won’t let others face the same.

βœ… More Student Jobs

  • Offer more campus jobs to students as part-time roles—our students have the skills.
  • Push the SU and university to create more paid student jobs—this is a mission.

βœ… Pay Students for SU Work – No More Free Labour

  • Convert unpaid SU roles into paid positions.
  • Cut unnecessary SU spending—redirect funds to pay our students working with us.

βœ… Cheaper Society & Sports Club Fees

  • Reduce federation fees so more students can join societies and sports clubs.

βœ… Curiositea Reading Club – Cheap Drinks, Good Books

  • A weekly reading club with hot drinks at minimal prices.

βœ… Cut Food Waste – Community Fridges for Students

  • Make Warwick Conferences and food outlets provide leftover meals in community fridges across campus.

βœ… Essential Campaigns – Push for Growth & Longevity

  • I will work to develop and expand key student-led campaigns by previous officers so they outlive us and grow even stronger.
  • Such as: End Period Poverty, Free Breakfast Club, Swap Shop.

πŸ’™ WELLBEING THAT WORKS – SUPPORT WHEN YOU NEED IT

βœ… 24/7 Support – No More Gaps

  • Work with the university to keep wellbeing services open on weekends and late hours.

βœ… Community Safety, Not Campus Policing

  • Work with the university to shift Community Safety from policing to actual welfare.
  • Focus on support, protection, and crisis help, more than enforcement.

βœ… Neurodiversity & Wellbeing in Education

  • Continue the Wellbeing Speaker Series to keep conversations going.
  • Push the university to make the Neurodiversity Toolkit available and emphasized for all staff.

βœ… Inclusive & Accessible Sports for Trans & Queer Students

  • Work with Warwick Sport to make sports affordable and truly inclusive.
  • Physical activity matters—nobody should be left out.

βœ… Less Stress, More Inclusive Assessments

  • Work with the university to ensure assessments are fair, flexible, and reduce unnecessary stress.

βœ… Better Support for Students with Caring Responsibilities

  • Work with the SU and university to provide better academic and financial support for student carers.
  • Prioritise earlier class timetable releases to help student carers, parents, and commuters in particular.

βœ… Build a Community for Neurodiverse, Mature & Carer Students

  • Create dedicated spaces and support networks to enhance their university experience.

βœ… Alpacas, Therapy Pets & More Wellbeing Events

  • Did you think I forgot? Never. More therapy pets, alpacas, and wellbeing events to bring campus some much-needed joy!

⚑ AN SU THAT WORKS FOR YOU – NO MORE BARRIERS

βœ… Streamline Clubs & Societies – Cut the Red Tape

  • Easier access to society/club finances and storage.
  • No more endless forms.
  • Less bureaucracy, more action.

βœ… Put Students Back in Charge

  • The SU must be student-led. No more top-down decisions.

βœ… Represent International Students – Fight for Fair Treatment

  • Lobby MPs to push the government to change the discriminatory salary threshold for visa-sponsored jobs.
  • Ensure international students have equal access to jobs and career progression.

βœ… Listen to Solve, Not Just Respond

  • Thinking of solutions before denying students should be the norm.
  • The default should be "we'll find a way"—not "we'll think about it."
  • The SU should go to students first, not wait for them to struggle.

βœ… An SU That Evolves With You

  • The SU must change with every generation of students.
  • It should adapt, act, and grow to meet student needs—not stay stuck in the past.

πŸ“š EDUCATION THAT WORKS FOR YOU – BEYOND JUST EXAMS

βœ… Fix Timetabling – Make It Efficient & Coherent

  • Work with the university to improve both class and exam timetabling.

βœ… Extend Bursaries & Support

  • Ensure financial aid reaches struggling students so they can focus on studying, not just surviving.

βœ… Keep Wednesday Afternoons Free for Everyone

  • Students deserve time for sports, extracurriculars, wellbeing, and a break from academics.

βœ… Assessments That Make Sense

  • Move beyond paper-based exams—make assessments more inclusive and sustainable.

βœ… Less Exams, More Learning

  • Work with the university to reduce the number of exams and focus on quality education, not just testing.

βœ… Your Education, Your Choice

  • More freedom in module choices and staggered timetables to fit student needs.
