VALLIAMMAI SUBRAMANIAN

About Me:

First-year BSc Economics student.

Marketing and Design team member at Warwick Kickstart.

Worked with Girl Up (a UN foundation) to advocate for women’s rights and empowerment and a current UN-CSW 69 participant.

Former Business Owner (Baked by Val).

Why I am Running:
I am running to become your Women's officer because I am extremely passionate about creating an environment at Warwick where all women not only feel safe but also feel empowered and heard. Given my entrepreneurial experience added to my background in economics, I am well aware of the struggles women face to establish themselves or their opinions, especially in male-dominated fields. This passion has motivated me to gain firsthand experience working for the advocacy of women's rights through Girl Up by communicating with diverse groups for gender equality and empowerment. I am committed to creating initiatives that carve the path to growth and leadership in the academic, professional, and personal lives of women at Warwick.

Goals:
a) Enhance campus safety and security
b) Improve and support women’s safety and mobility.
c) Ensure the continuation of the previous SU initiative that empowers women through well-being and professional development.

Plan to achieve them:

  • Enhance campus safety and security:
  1. Emergency Phone Booths: Set up emergency phone booths near accommodations for immediate assistance during late hours.

  2. Increase Pathway Lighting: Install additional lighting along the pathways near Scarman Cafe leading to Sherbourne and Lakeside accommodations to ensure safer travel at night.

  3. Security Checkpoint Implementation: Establish a security checkpoint on the road connecting campus to Tesco Road to prevent unauthorised entry and reduce safety concerns, including theft and/or harassment.

  • Improve and support women’s safety and mobility:
  1. Self-Defence Workshops: Organise weekly self-defence workshops at subsidised rates for female students and staff to equip them with essential safety skills.

  2. Women-Only Night Bus Service: Introduce a dedicated bus service for women operating from 1 AM to 4 AM every 45 minutes during Neon and Smack to ensure a safer commute.

  • Ensure the continuation of the previous SU initiative that empowers women through well-being and professional development:
  1. Salary Negotiation & Leadership Training: Continue conducting workshops and focus more on salary negotiation and leadership skills to empower women in their career growth.

  2. Reducing Period Poverty: Continue access to free products across campus and ensure they are refilled on a weekly basis to reduce period poverty.
