Warwick SU for the continuation and praise of the monarchy

This Union Notes:

This section should include any facts, figures or statements that you believe are relevant to the topic of your policy. Remember in this section clear and effective referencing is important.

  1. God Save the Queen[1]

  1. Warwick Student Union previously submitted a motion to the National Union of Students, which pledged to abolish the monarchy[2]

  1. Every British Citizen is also a subject of ‘Her Majesty, Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, Ireland and the British Dominions beyond the Seas Queen, Defender of the Faith, Duchess of Edinburgh, Countess of Merioneth, Baroness Greenwich, Duke of Lancaster, Lord of Mann, Duke of Normandy, Sovereign of the Most Honourable Order of the Garter, Sovereign of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Sovereign of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, Sovereign of the Most Illustrious Order of Saint Patrick, Sovereign of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Sovereign of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Sovereign of the Distinguished Service Order, Sovereign of the Imperial Service Order, Sovereign of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India, Sovereign of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire, Sovereign of the Order of British India, Sovereign of the Indian Order of Merit, Sovereign of the Order of Burma, Sovereign of the Royal Order of Victoria and Albert, Sovereign of the Royal Family Order of King Edward VII, Sovereign of the Order of Merit, Sovereign of the Order of the Companions of Honour, Sovereign of the Royal Victorian Order, Sovereign of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem’[3]

This Union Believes:

This section should include opinions or supporting statements for your policy.

  1. That the Monarchy should not be abolished, and instead should continue to operate in the United Kingdom in perpetuity.

  1. That submitting a motion to the NUS pledging to abolish the monarchy, goes against the duties of a loyal subject (of which we should all strive to be).

  1. That this motion is, in effect, an apology for the previous motion submitted to the NUS and is a reaffirmation of Warwick Student Union’s loyalty to the monarchy.

This Union Resolves:

This section should be about how you want the SU to react, the outcome of this policy. Remember to mandate specific departments/sabbatical officers; this will make things easier for future accountability

  1. Mandate every Sabbatical Officer, part-time officer and the Chair/s of the All Student Meeting to play and sing the United Kingdom National Anthem at the beginning of every ASV (This is to be included in the video of said ASV). Furthermore, mandate all Council Members to play and sing the British National Anthem at the beginning of every Student Council meeting.

  1. Erect and maintain a full-sized flag post outside the SU Atrium in/by Piazza that flies the Royal Standard on Royal occasions and the Union Jack on every other day.

  1. Mandate the Student Union to state its support of the Monarchy. This statement is to be found on the Warwick SU website, Facebook and Twitter.

  1. Mandate the President to send a positive letter to Queen Elizabeth II on both her birthdays every year, wishing her a happy birthday. (This to be continued for future UK monarchs).

  1. Mandate the President to write a letter of apology to Queen Elizabeth II for the prior actions of the Warwick Student Union of submitting a motion to the NUS wanting to abolish the monarchy.

  1. Rename the Student Union President to 'Leading Officer' as President is the term used in a Republican State, of which we aren't.

  1. Put in place a framed picture (at least A3 sized or larger) of Queen Elizabeth II, and future UK monarchs, behind every SU outlet counter. This picture is to be clearly visible. And lobby on-campus non-SU outlets to follow suit with the same practice.

  1. Recommend every full-time and part-time officer to read 'The Queen: A Biography of Elizabeth II' by Ben Pimlott. This is to better grasp the life and times of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

  1. When full-time and part-time officers are writing their letters to Queen Elizabeth II. In the first instance, refer to her as ‘‘Her Majesty, Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, Ireland and the British Dominions beyond the Seas Queen, Defender of the Faith, Duchess of Edinburgh, Countess of Merioneth, Baroness Greenwich, Duke of Lancaster, Lord of Mann, Duke of Normandy, Sovereign of the Most Honourable Order of the Garter, Sovereign of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Sovereign of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, Sovereign of the Most Illustrious Order of Saint Patrick, Sovereign of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Sovereign of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Sovereign of the Distinguished Service Order, Sovereign of the Imperial Service Order, Sovereign of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India, Sovereign of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire, Sovereign of the Order of British India, Sovereign of the Indian Order of Merit, Sovereign of the Order of Burma, Sovereign of the Royal Order of Victoria and Albert, Sovereign of the Royal Family Order of King Edward VII, Sovereign of the Order of Merit, Sovereign of the Order of the Companions of Honour, Sovereign of the Royal Victorian Order, Sovereign of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem’. Subsequently refer to her simply as ‘Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith’. If this is found to be too long as to make the writing of correspondence impractical, allow a shortened alternative so long as it still maintains due respect.
