Happy New Year! We trust you all had a relaxing Christmas break and are ready to get stuck back in for Term 2. Following up on the issues raised last term, SU Postgrad Officer Lucy Gill is currently looking into the problems surrounding Postgraduate Teaching Pay – please see below if you’ve been affected by this!

In the meantime, things show no sign of slowing down here at the Union – for starters, ONE WORLD WEEK will return in Week 3, bringing you the perfect opportunity to explore the various cultures which make up Warwick’s diverse student body. Bandsoc’s annual BATTLE OF THE BANDS tournament will also be rearing its head from Week 4 onwards, while our sports teams will be gearing up for another shot at the VARSITY title in the latter half of term. All this plus the massive REAL ALE FESTIVAL in Week 6, the Officer Elections and our various campaign weeks – this term including Disability Awareness Week, Animal Ethics Week, Sexual Health Awareness Week and Women’s Week. We look forward to seeing you out and about!

We’d like to hear from Postgrads who teach (or hourly-paid teachers) about holiday pay. Are you confused? Have you been paid correctly, either for your holidays or for last term’s teaching? Have the University been in touch to issue you with new/corrected contracts or updated Terms & Conditions? Email postgrads@warwicksu.com with all the details!

Next week, all research students are invited to attend a reception hosted by the Graduate School. The evening is an opportunity for new researchers to find out more about life as a PhD student at Warwick and for returning researchers to extend their network and remind yourself of the ways that Warwick can help you with your research degree.

SU Postgraduate Officer Lucy Gill will be running her regular drop-in sessions again on Fridays this term at the PG Hub – pop in to speak to her between 2-4pm each week if there’s anything she can help you with!

Tickets for our regular events – Pop!, Skool Dayz, Flashback, Drop and Crash – are now available via the SU website. Look out for more events coming throughout the term as soon as they go on sale!

We have a raft of great offers on main courses and desserts throughout the week. Pop up to the pub when you’re feeling peckish to find out what’s available!

We’re hosting a new event in The Terrace Bar on Monday nights at 10pm - expect a backdrop of fresh Latin music and a dance floor full of smooth salsa dancers, brought to you by Warwick Salsa Society!

Meant to join a sports club in Term 1 but didn’t get round to it? It’s never too late to get involved in sport here at Warwick – come along and find out what’s on offer at our special Refreshers Fair this Thursday (9th January) from 11am-3pm in the Atrium!

The deadline for applications for the Lord Rootes Memorial Fund – allocated to projects which enhance your personal development - is 12pm Noon this Thursday (9th January). Previous award winners have kayaked to Finland, cycled down the Mekong River and carried out a behavioural study of Great White Sharks off the coast of South Africa - do something extraordinary during your time at University with the help of this funding!

This week’s special is Hot Roast Chicken with Chunky Chorizo in a Tomato Arrabbiata Sauce for £3.45. For a vegetarian-friendly option, you can swap the chicken for Roast Mediterranean Vegetables.

Student Reception, Student Finance & Funding and the Graduate School have now moved from their previous locations in University House to the ground floor of Senate House on central campus - visit the link above for full details.

The University’s Careers & Skills department will be running a Twitter campaign this week encouraging students to pledge “one thing” you aim to do or achieve in 2014 to enhance your career or personal development. Get tweeting from 6th Jan using the hashtag #1thingin2014 - £20 credit on Eating@Warwick cards will be awarded for three randomly-selected student tweets! Competition closes this Friday, 10th January.

Warwick Active's Intramural Leagues are the perfect way to get some friends together, keep active, stay social and have fun. Designed for any level of ability and competiveness, make sure you get involved by either joining your Hall, Society or Department Teams or just grabbing a few of your mates for a bit of fun on the pitch, court or field!
