Calling all Postgrads! We have a special guest speaker from the NUS coming to talk about national postgraduate campaigns - from postgraduates who teach to the PG funding issue Come along to the Mighty Duck from 5-6.30pm on Tuesday 27th November to hear more about what’s happening nationally and how you can get involved!

Are you a Postgraduate student who teaches? If so, then we want to hear from YOU! The NUS is working with students' unions across the country and the UCU to launch a nationwide survey of postgraduate teachers. The survey covers a number of contentious areas such as pay, contracts, application process, workload, training and feedback.

We know that there is wide disparity in the treatment of postgraduate students who teach at their universities - what we don't have is comprehensive national data on the issue. This lack of data for national comparisons has prevented the spread of good practice and the public acknowledgement of unfair treatment.

This survey is a real chance to make a difference and it allows us to lobby the University here at Warwick for better conditions!

Head to surveymonkey.com/s/NUSPGteach to complete the survey.

After up to 10 years at university, the move out of academia can sometimes be a difficult one for PhD students. This is not helped by those employers who are nervous about recruiting PhDs, who they may view as overly academic or specialised.

ATASS Sports is a commercial organisation which specialises in statistical research in sports, and actively recruits PhD students. In this session, ATASS Sports will share their recruitment experiences and discuss the transition from academia to industry, including tips on where to look for appropriate roles and how to present the skills gained during a PhD.

The session from ATASS Sports is on 11 Dec, 12-2pm. To register, head to myAdvantage.

There is no need to rush with getting your housing sorted for next year, but we want to make sure you have all the information you need to make the right decision when you are ready. Come along to the Housing Day on Tuesday 27th November in the Atrium from 10am-4pm for advice on getting a house, contracts, the local area or anything else. It is also the first chance to see Warwick Accommodation’s properties. Check out the event on Facebook or email welfare@warwicksu.com for more information!

Following the success of the first event last year, we are pleased to announce the first of three Education Conventions happening this academic year. The first event will take place on Wednesday 28th November in Maths and Stats Building from 3pm-6pm.

This is your opportunity to discuss your issues and ideas with your Students’ Union Sabbatical Officers, Faculty Representatives, senior University staff members including those from within the central University structure and across the different services and with other students both within and outside of your faculty. There will also be sessions on SSLC best practice, Union campaigns for this year and the brand new SSLC portal.

All welcome, but SSLC reps should attend, particularly chairs and secretaries. Each course should ensure that they have at least one rep there to represent them and they should feed back to the SSLC afterwards. A light buffet will be provided.

Please let us know if you are coming by signing up online at warwicksu.com/sslc or emailing samantha.sandilands@warwicksu.com.

Strictly Come Dancing - After partnering up with members of the Latin & Ballroom Club, members of our Sports Clubs will be taking the floor on Tuesday 27th November with a variety of dances to battle it out for the 2012 title!

Discover Disabled Sport - After the excitement of the Paralympic Games, in association with Warwick Sport we are hosting a taster event on Friday 30thNovember to experience a number of different disabled sports. The aim is to illustrate what we can offer at Warwick through two new initiatives, ‘Warwick Active’ and ‘Warwick Lifestyle’, as well as identifying opportunities in the local area. It is open to all students and staff, as we hope to gain feedback from the day to be able to develop a program which will launch next year. Sign up to the free events on our website.

Dance For Sport Relief - After weeks of rehearsals, 11 Clubs will be taking centre stage on Friday 30th November to illustrate how multi-talented Warwick students truly are… This is definitely an event not to miss - we can guarantee you will spend the night laughing, and it's all for a great charity!

The Right To Play 2013 Warwick Sport Naked Calendars - There are only 500 this year and they are going very quickly - make sure you buy yours from the Piazza/SU between 12pm and 3pm every day before they sell out!

The library is trying to get views on opening hours (in particular, 24 hour opening) in order to make plans for 2013. If you have a few minutes spare, why don’t you fill in this quick survey so the University knows whether a 24 hour library would be useful to you? The Library is also offering a chance to win one of four £10 Amazon vouchers if you complete the survey.

We are currently asking for volunteers for the STARS of Warwick committee for 2012-13. Last year it was a great success with over 350 nominations and a memorable awards evening, with the student committee responsible for deciding on everything from the categories to the wine at the event!

The time commitment is as big or small as you want it to be – there will be an introductory meeting on Monday 26th November at 5.30pm in SUHQ Meeting Room 6. If you wish to attend this meeting, please email samantha.sandilands@warwicksu.com - if you can’t make this time but wish to be involved, please still get in touch! We are hoping to make it bigger and better than last year, so all we ask is that you are willing to get out there and get students involved by nominating their favourite staff members!

The UCU (University and College Union) has a history of fighting casualization, and they demand fair treatment of University staff. They campaign for permanent contracts, against vulnerable employment and for fair working conditions for staff on casual contracts.

If you are interested, want to campaign or just want to find out more, then come along to H3.02 (Humanities Building) on 3rd December from 1-2pm.

Interested in community and voluntary issues? Want to get involved in Leamington?
