Hi everyone - hope the first week of term went well, and that you’re all settling into your studies!

Don't forget that if you're ever unsure of anything, experiencing problems or just need someone to talk to, our Student Advice Team are based on the top floor of SUHQ, as are your Sabbatical Officer Team. As always, all info relating to the SU can be found on our website – warwicksu.com – or you can email enquiries@warwicksu.com with any questions you may have and we'll get back to you as soon as possible!

Here’s an update on what’s happening here at the SU.

The Postgraduate Association, as you may already be aware, is a new and exciting representative body designed to represent all postgraduate needs. The committee will be made up of the PG Officer, the 4 Faculty Representatives, a social secretary and a PGR rep. The nominations to run for Faculty Rep are open now until 12th October. The social secretary role and the PGR rep will be appointed at the first PGA meeting. The meetings are for all Postgraduate students and we will be discussing academic/non-academic issues and arranging social events too. We need as many Postgrads as possible if we are to represent PG needs and interests. Please come along to the first meeting on the Thursday 25th October (Week 4) at 5.30pm in the Mighty Duck.

Nominations are now open for the Postgraduate Councillor positions (5 available) and for the Postgraduate Faculty Representatives (Arts, Social Science and Science). Postgraduate Faculty Representatives sit on important committees within the University and are able to influence the decision-making process. This post also extends to the Students’ Union as it entitles you to a seat on the Student Council and the PGA committee. Postgrad Councillors sit on Student Council and attend All-Student Meetings where they represent their year group. So if you feel Postgraduates are under-represented in the Union, this is your opportunity to implement change! Head to warwicksu.com/elections for more info and to nominate yourself. Nominations close on this Friday (12th October).

We are launching two new support networks at the Students’ Union. For Student Parents from 9.30am on Monday mornings on Weeks 3, 5, 7 and 9, we are starting a free coffee morning (children and toys very welcome!) as an opportunity to meet others and chat in an informal atmosphere, as well as a chance for us to hear how we can support you better as a Students’ Union. On the Thursday of the alternate weeks – 4, 6, 8, and 10 from 11:00am-1pm– there will be a Drop-In session in the Advice Centre available specifically to chat, help and support Students who are Carers. If you have any questions about either of these, please do get in touch with Ben at welfare@warwicksu.com.

Every other Saturday we will be holding a postgrad night called the Saturday Session at the Terrace Bar (above the atrium in the SU) from 9pm till late. There will be a different ‘stripped-back’ or acoustic performance at each event and the playlist will consist of relaxed, eclectic sounds from across the spectrum of Soul, Jazz, Funk, Reggae, Acoustica, chilled Electronica and anything else which lends itself to a soundtrack for conversation! The next one is on Saturday 20th October so please do come along and invite your friends too!

Want to represent your course? Want to discuss educational issues and concerns with academics from your department? Then think about standing as an academic rep in your Student Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC). There will be elections in one of your lectures or online, so keep an eye out, and get involved!

Do you want to run the next Big Issue? Fancy setting up a new Fifteen? Have you got an enterprise idea that could really make a difference - something that could improve social inclusion, or help deliver real social change? If so, the Ernst & Young Social Enterprise Project is the ideal opportunity to put your ideas into practice! Register online for our Launch Event on 15th October (Monday Week 3) and find out more about how you can get involved in this exciting scheme at warwicksu.com/socialenterprise.

We have a variety of societies for all students to get involved in. If you missed the Societies Fair last week then head to warwicksu.com/societies for information on all of the societies and how to get involved! In order to join a society, you must purchase Societies Federation membership (a one off fee of £14). You can join societies throughout the year so please do get involved!

If you missed the Sports Fair last Tuesday it is not too late to become part of Warwick Sport! Clubs are still holding taster sessions and you are still welcome to go along to their training. In addition you can now register for our Ernst & Young Intra-Mural Leagues and become involved in our new initiative, Warwick Active, which organises different activities throughout the week including a casual running club on Mondays. Further information can be found on the Warwick Sport website.
