Come see Vertigo presented on 35mm film on the big screen in L3!
Vertigo infamously received a rather lukewarm reception upon release in 1958, but do not let historical opinion fool you: it is often considered to be seminal director Alfred Hitchcock’s magnum opus, and counted now among the greatest films ever made. Starring James Stewart and Kim Novak, Hitchcock deftly unfolds the story of a retired detective suffering from acrophobia, who is hired by a friend to investigate his wife… who is believed to have been possessed by a late Spanish woman. Hitchcock blends a variety of generic ideas across Vertigo, all the while retaining his signature tension, featuring multiple slow-paced sequences to accentuate moments of utter calamity. Beyond a thrilling narrative, Vertigo is also monumental in its direction and cinematography; famously, this was the first film to use the now-familiar ‘dolly zoom’ technique — later featured seventeen years later in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws — to imitate the experience of vertigo. Furthermore, Hitchcock harbours an astonishing usage and control of colour to simulate experiences of psychological torment, highlighting Hitchcock’s filmmaking variety. Beyond this, some of the film’s most iconic images — such as that of the Golden Gate Bridge — are simply stunning in their own right, regardless of narrative significance. With North by Northwest and Psycho both released within the following two years, Vertigo represents a director at the height of his powers. [Sam Ripley]
