Emilia Pérez might be one of the most unique films of this year, a crime comedy musical following lawyer Rita (Zoe Saldaña) as she is hired to help a feared cartel leader disappear… in order to transition. The newly christened Emilia Pérez (Karla Sofía Gascón) must fake her death and leave her wife (Selena Gomez) and children behind in order to live a new life, but nothing is ever that simple.

All three leads won the Best Actress awards at Cannes, making Karla Sofía Gascón the first openly trans actor to win a major prize there. And of course, as with many musicals, this is a film that simply has to be experienced on the big screen — so what are you waiting for? [Cerys Bardsley]
