ENAYA FOR PRESIDENT

Putting the “you” back in the SU

WHO AM I?

Your current VP for Welfare and Campaigns!

Your Women’s Officer 2022-23

International Student (EPAIS) and previous President of Warwick Multicultural Society

Previous exec for both Boxing and Warwick Anti-Sexism Society

Taylor Swift and Fall Out Boy Enthusiast

WHAT HAVE I DONE SO FAR?:

- THE (FREE) BREAKFAST CLUB: I secured over £8k to provide free breakfasts to approx. 350 students twice a week in the Green Room!

- END PERIOD POVERTY: As your Women’s Officer, I provided over 27k of menstrual products on campus, led a brilliant team of 43 volunteers, and made the funding permanent!!

- SAFER WARWICK:  I surveyed 1269 students to improve lighting, introduce a bus/taxi service that’ll help you get home safe (especially from Cov!), and Emma & I made Women & Non-Binary Self-Defence Classes permanent!!

MY TOP PRIORITIES:

1. Empower YOUR voice by making our SU processes more transparent and accessible.

2. Make essentials, food, transport, accommodation, sports clubs and societies more affordable.

3. Help make Warwick Safer - with improved lighting, and a permanent welfare stand at POP!

4. Diverse wellbeing support for varied student needs, without barriers, for International, Part-time, and Disabled Students

5. Your Education, Your Choice: self-certifications for all degrees, flexible assessment methods, and earlier exam timetable releases

 1. Making our SU more transparent and accessible

  •  Publicise All Student Vote dates, motions and campaigns/project funding deadlines in advance each term for ALL students

  • Transparent decision-making processes from Impact Assessment through to motions being actioned, so students know how the SU is responding to our input and asks.

  •  Increase student engagement with SU democracy by providing policy toolkits and easy-to-access resources on the SU webpage

  • Provide a tailored SU offering for International Students through specialised advice in our Advice Centre, a culture week and diverse club nights at the Copper Rooms

  • Review our complaints procedure to make it accessible for members of Societies and Sports Clubs.

  • Recognise ongoing student campaigns through a liberation and diversity associations structure which represents students, builds communities and funds campaigns on campus.

2. Tackle the Cost-of-Living Crisis

  • Embed the (Free) Breakfast Club and End Period Poverty campaigns as permanent provisions on campus, which all students can access.

  • Prioritise the SU becoming a Real Living Wage employer

  • Work with other SUs to lobby nationally for affordable housing strategies and for maintenance loans to rise in line with inflation.

  • Provide free workshops to help students develop skills such as cooking, budgeting, and sustainable practices.

  • Work to lock down the prices of essentials in SU and University outlets, including halal, vegan and kosher options.

  • Continue Anna’s Better Buses campaign, working with local district councils and bus companies to improve the efficiency and affordability of the buses.

  • Tackle the cost of sports and socialising by cutting Socs and Sports Federation Fees, lobbying the University to increase BUCS funding, and introducing both a non-BUCS pot and a club development pot to support sports clubs.

3. Helping students feel Safer at Warwick

  • Push for the University to adopt Safezone, an app that allows you to access emergency services such as community safety, first aid, and well-being

  • Continue working on lighting on paths between central campus and Gibbet Hill, Westwood, and more, with Estates and Community Safety

  • Call for the University to meet student demands around safety on campus (for example, providing personal safety alarms and blinds in on-campus accommodation)

  • Provide a late-night taxi service from campus to Coventry and lobby for the return of the West Midlands On-Demand Bus Service towards Warwickshire.

  • Get SU outlets (T-Bar and Copper Rooms) certified as Safe Places by the Egalitarian Project.

  • Ensure that we have a permanent welfare stand (providing free pregnancy tests, drink covers, contraceptives, etc;) at the Copper Rooms manned by paid student staff

4. Focus on Student Wellbeing

  •  Lobby Wellbeing to hire multilingual advisors and run cultural awareness training to better cater to International students.

  • Lobby for the introduction of different types of therapy (apart from CBT) into the Wellbeing service, as well as a 24/7 mental health nurse to support students in emergencies.

  • Introduce workshops on tackling imposter syndrome to help students adapt to University life and academic burnout.

  • Work towards a long-term model of support for victims of sexual harassment and assault with Wellbeing, the Sexual and Domestic Abuse Advisor and the SU Advice Centre

  • Work on suicidal awareness and support students struggling with their mental health through a campaign focused on Helping a Mate.

  • Call for buildings to be more accessible to students with physical disabilities and make sure that curbs are dropped for wheelchair accessibility around campus.

5. Your Education, Your Choice

  • Push for self-certifications across the board

  • Advocate for more quiet study spaces and private meeting rooms that are accessible to all.

  • Lobby for earlier releases of teaching and exam timetables

  • Call for departments to offer varied assessment methods to enable students to choose the assessment methods to support student success.

  • Centralise all information related to timetables and assessment deadlines on the MyWarwick App across departments

  • Advance the ongoing efforts to release academic resources and reading lists earlier to help students prepare for the next academic year
