We are Warwick Game Design Society - we make games. Video games. Card games. VR games. Board games. You can be a programmer, artist, writer, designer, musician, animator, modeller, or not yet know what you want to be. No prior experience is required so come along and get stuck in!
The best way to keep in touch with is via our Discord server: https://discord.gg/H5BqyXv7zu
We also post regular updates to our instagram.
Term-time Schedule
Open workshop - Tuesday 3-6 pm
The workshop is a drop-in session for people to come along, collaborate with others on games and bounce ideas off one another. We welcome people who want to show off what they're working on, find playtesters, and get feedback, so don't be shy if you've got something to show! We also provide teaching resources about Godot and other engines for complete beginners.
Teaching session - Wednesday 3-6 pm
Our weekly in-person teaching sessions cover topics from blender to the history of puzzlers, through to roguelike gameplay design. We've had many more topics in the past:
- Surviving your first game jam: how to prepare your tools and get into a healthy mindset before jamming
- Making your game stand out: tips to make the first 5 minutes stand out in a crowd and things to avoid doing
- The history of FPS games: how FPS games developed from their origins in 'Maze War' through to DOOM and beyond
- Introducing narrative in games: making the narrative a key part of the design process
- How to make music for games: the tools available and a bit of introductory music theory
These sessions are open to anyone with any combination of skills, be prepared for some mid-session activities!
Industry Events
In the past we have invited industry leaders from local branches of Rebellion and SEGA at society events to network with prospective undergrads and given talks about their experiences in industry. These lecture-style sessions have varied across:
- Employability workshops: CVs and cover letters, and what recruiters look for in your portfolio
- Experiential talks: the progression of developers and designers through the industry
- Triple-A game design: how AAA games are planned, designed, marketed and published
Game Jams
Around twice a term, we host a Game Jam during the weekend. A theme is announced at the start and you're free to use whatever tools and assets you'd like to make a game by the end! Working in teams is greatly encouraged but not enforced. They're a great event for prototyping new ideas, or you can just use them as an excuse to work on a longer-term project! In the past, we've had:
- Collaboration with Warwick Tabletop Games and Roleplaying Society on a board games jam
- A narrative-focused game jam
- Collaboration events with the CS Dept. on the Great Warwick Game Jam (keep an eye out in January!)
Other events
We hold other regular and one-off events whenever the opportunity arises, including:
- Gaming Socials to play local multiplayer games - it's great fun!
- The WGD Quiz - we've already had one for our freshers event
- Scavenger hunts across the Warwick campus
There are one-off events in the pipeline all the time so look out on our social media channels for more information!
