Warwick Anti-Racism Society

Warwick Anti-Racism Society

The University of Warwick Anti-Racism Society (often referred to as WARsoc) is a society dedicated to anti-racism. Our outlook is shaped radical traditions and our approach involves reimagining what the future looks like for oppressed people

As a society, we do several things:

  • We hold a wide range of events, such as discussions, reading/film clubs, talks, speaker events and panels and more, where we talk about issues broadly relating to race/racism.
  • We also run (and support) campaigns to fight against racism in the university, student body, and wider community, such as pressuring and protesting against the University to end its relationships with unethical companies and industries and supporting student and staff demands for racial justice in areas such as the curriculum, security, pay and pensions.
  • We also aim to generally be a space for those with anti-racist politics to meet and hang-out with like-minded people, especially for the most marginalised members of our communities. We are a safe space for queer and trans people of colour. Though anti-racism is a serious project, we are a *super* chill & informal society & firmly believe that we can't always just be talking about politics, we also need time to breathe! This means that we will hold socials throughout the year.

Whether you have read the likes of Angela Davis, Frantz Fanon or Walter Rodney before, and/or have been involved in anti-racist activism before, or if you have only recently become interested in anti-racism and simply want to discuss, listen and learn more about anti-racist politics, or whether you simply want to meet people who are like you, WARsoc is the space for you and always open to people who are interested in anti-racism!

Our politics are informed by a range of radical traditions that understand forms of oppression and exploitation, such as racism(s), gender inequality, ableism, queerphobia and (global) poverty, as overlapping and intrinsically linked. As an exec, we aim to provide a safe space for all of our members. We want everyone to feel welcome and safe from bigotry. This does not mean that members will not be challenged, or that there is no room for debate and critique (rather, we aim to constantly be reflective and self-critical), but it does mean that we expect members to challenge or argue appropriately. Anyone expressing discriminatory views will be asked to leave our spaces.
