Welcome to Warwick Astronomy Society!

Athough we are linked to the Physics & Astrophysics degree, Warwick Astronomy Society is open to students from all backgrounds, humanities or STEM or anything else! We want to bring together people passionate about astronomy and all things space: it doesn’t matter if you are a novice or an expert, everyone is welcome!

We organise biweekly talks, socials, observing sessions and trips out!  We also provide handy revision guides for astronomy modules (see below when logged in to SU website)! Currently, our regular scheduled talks are Tuesdays of even weeks, from 7pm. But keep an eye out for extra special bonus talks! For socials, make sure you check the Facebook Page, where you can also see previous events we've done. Our observing sessions are suitable for everyone, since the exec are on hand to help you learn how to look at the night sky and get you pointed literally and figuratively in the right direction! Keep your eyes peeled for our 2025 Freshers Observing event, where we'll be teaching you how to find objects on the sky!

Observing

Night-time observing sessions are typically hosted near the Cryfield Sports Pavilion (but be sure to check event posts for details!). We have a wide range of equipment available for members to use and expert exec on-hand to guide the event, feel free to join a group observing around one of our telescopes or just hang out with friends under the stars. We also often run solar observing events during the day in partnership with the CFSA using specialised solar telescopes designed to observe the sun safely.

Our current equipment includes:

  • The 10" Dobsonian telescope - Perfect for observing planets, the Moon, and deep sky objects
  • A secret larger telescope, with more details to be revealed during Welcome Week
  • A large number of binoculars - Grab one from our exec and take a look at stars, clusters, and the moons of Jupiter
  • Tracking mounts - Capable of cancelling out the Earth's rotation, these allow use to take images and follow objects as they move across the sky
  • A high sensitivity astronomy camera
  • Many smaller telescopes - Including those with solar filters
  • More coming soon!

Members are also able to be trained on the University's new Marsh Observatory, featuring a professional 0.4m Meade telescope and state-of-the-art digital camera.
