TOMI AMOLE

TOMI #1 FOR WELFARE AND CAMPAIGNS

Students Deserve Better.

ABOUT ME

I'm Tomi (he/him) and I'm running to be your welfare and campaigns officer. The University fails us left, right and center, from its failures to tackle sexual violence and racism, to inadequate mental health support and extortionate rent and living costs on campus. I'm running because I think students deserve better. I will fight for the welfare of students, and to support campaigns which work towards a liberated campus.

MY EXPERIENCE

  • President of Warwick Anti-Racism Society 21/22

  • Exec member of Warwick Action Palestine 20/21 & 21/22

  • Rent Strike organiser

  • NUS Delegate 2022

MY PRIORITIES

a) Tackle sexual violence on campus & provide better support for survivors

b) Improving Mental Health support

c) Fight against extortionate rent and living costs

d) Anti-racism and other liberation campaigns

TACKLING SEXUAL VIOLENCE

Time and time again we are reminded that Warwick is not a safe place, especially for women. If elected, I will:

  • Run an anti-spiking campaign across SU venues and across social media

  • Fight back against Non-Disclosure Agreements being used to silence survivors

  • Lobby the university to hire therapists who are specialists in dealing with SA for Wellbeing services.

  • Lobby for more Independent Sexual Violence Advisors

IMPROVING MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT

Despite a university surplus of nearly £80m last year, many students find themselves unable to access adequate mental health support. If elected, I will:

  • Lobby the university to double the amount of money spent on mental health services, to expand the kinds of therapy offered by Wellbeing & to ensure that care is culturally-competent

  • Lobby to create a new departmental Mental Health student liason role to ensure students are given appropriate accommodations by their departments.

  •  Lobby to abolish doctors' notes fees, increase the number of self-certifications and reduce the evidence needed for extensions and mitigating circumstances.

  • Fight to abolish drug fines & provide harm reduction resources for students struggling with addiction

FIGHTING AGAINST EXTORTIONATE RENT AND LIVING COSTS

Despite the huge profits made by the University students face high costs of living, not least from the extortionate rent for both on and off-campus accommodation. Housing is a human right. If elected, I will

  • Support the rent strike, and empower students to continue to resist extortionate rents by organising themselves, both on and beyond campus. I'll defend those still striking from previous years from the Uni's threats to use debt collectors against them

  • Fight for a three-year freeze on rent

  • Lobby for the return of Warwick Accommodation to offer more accessible and secure housing for students

  • Lobby for a reduction in the ridiculous prices of food and drink in SU outlets & on campus

SUPPORT ANTI-RACISM AND OTHER LIBERATION CAMPAIGNS

Warwick is an institution rife with racism and other forms of discrimination and oppression. If elected, I will:

  • Continue to support the Black Students Demands’ to the University and hold Warwick to account for their appalling responses to Black students in the wake of BLM.

  • Work with Report + Support to ensure that racist abuse is dealt with

  • Lobby for institutional non-compliance with the Islamophobic PREVENT and racist Hostile Environment policies

  • Affirm the SU's commitment to solidarity with the UCU

  • Lobby for divestment from unethical industries like the arms trade.

VOTE TOMI #1 FOR WELFARE. BECAUSE STUDENTS DESERVE BETTER.
