Hi! I’m Jemma Ansell, and I’m running for the position of Welfare and Campaigns Officer 2018/19.
I strongly believe that university should be a welcoming environment and am therefore passionate about improving R&R facilities, mental health support systems, frequency of sexual health clinics and support for students who feel far from home.

Campus Comfort:
Dilemma:
The only space available to relax on campus free of charge is currently ‘The Graduate.’
Vote Jemma:
- Create ‘Rest and Relaxation’ zones around campus. These will be comfortable, free spaces which contain nap pods and entertainment facilities.
Dilemma:
Travelling onto campus can be a daunting and expensive experience.
Vote Jemma:
- Increase the provision of kitchen facilities and free hot water across campus.
- Introduce a baggage storage area in Copper Rooms 2; making it possible to ditch your kit bag or POP! costume until the moment you need it.
Mental Health:
Dilemma:
As of 2016 Warwick spends £11.92 per student on mental health services per year.
Vote Jemma:
- Continue the current Welfare Officer’s efforts to increase funding for mental health services; improving student access to counselling services.
Dilemma:
Societal and Sports Club welfare officers receive little to no training; limiting their ability to provide support to fellow club members.
Vote Jemma:
- Provide mandatory training sessions for current and incoming exec members along with welfare resource packs.
Dilemma:
Mental health awareness days are excellent short-term solutions, however there are limited long-term options available beyond counselling.
Vote Jemma:
- Introduce optional weekly sessions that students can attend on a regular basis. e.g. ‘Mindfulness Mondays’ or a ‘Crisis Café.’
- Continue to introduce more Mental Health Awareness sessions – they are beneficial regardless of being short-term.
Dilemma:
Self-help resources are difficult to locate, follow through and appear clinically intimidating.
Vote Jemma:
- Create a welcoming, logical and clear web interface which makes every support system easy to understand and locate.
Health and Wellbeing:
Dilemma:
Sexual Health Clinics are not held regularly enough.
Vote Jemma:
- Increase the frequency of sexual health clinics held both in Leam and on campus.
Dilemma:
Buying lunch on campus every day can be both expensive and often unhealthy.
Vote Jemma:
- Create a campaign which focuses on providing budget-friendly, healthy packed lunch ideas and meal prepping.
- The introduction of more kitchen facilities will make warming and preparing lunches easier.
- Work with Rootes Grocery store to display healthier food options alongside those which are less healthy.
Dilemma:
Stressful periods such as exam season can lead to alterations in eating habits, which consequently leads to a dip in self-esteem levels.
Vote Jemma:
- Work in collaboration with the sports officer to provide free weekly fitness sessions throughout term 3 – both competitive and non-competitive.
- Work in collaboration with health-conscious brands to provide free snacks and samples to those studying on campus throughout exams.
- Increase de-stressing events throughout term 3.
Student Safety:
Dilemma:
Considerable rise in Canley crime rate.
Vote Jemma:
- Provide free self-defence lessons and advice sessions on what to do in situations in which a student may feel threatened.
- Provide clear advice online on how to report a situation.
International Students:
Dilemma:
Feelings of homesickness and unfamiliarity are daunting, often leading to a lack of integration.
Vote Jemma:
- Host a bi-weekly event which features one particular country– providing both food and entertainment from that week’s chosen nation. Encourage societies and groups which would not normally spend time together to attend.
Dilemma:
Luggage limitations make it difficult for international students to bring everything necessary to university.
Vote Jemma:
- Invite Ikea to open a pop up shop on campus throughout both orientation and Freshers week.
- Ensure a copious supply of adapters are being sold in Rootes throughout the first few weeks of uni.
Campus Campaigns:
No Dilemma Here:
- Calming Cat Care – the cat-lovers alternative to Doggy De-stress Day.
- Hangover Breakfast Club- Free breakfast on a Thursday to encourage higher attendance levels at 9am seminars.
- Midnight Madness- Whether you’re pulling a desperate all-nighter, or you’re simply a night owl, free tea, coffee and biscuits in the Library should help get you through the night!
- No spare change?- I’d work to make every dispensing machine on campus accessible by card.
- Still no spare change? – Work to install change machines at the bus interchange.
- Jammy Jemma- free toast after POP! And an improved selection of biscuits available to all!
